Twink, the Toy Piano Band! Twink, the Toy Piano Band!

Review of A Very Fine Adventure from Skyscraper Magazine by Grant Purdum

Every Twink "adventure" has a mad-scientist feel to it, whether it dips into old record crates, toy boxes, or whatever the nutty, kids-cartoon stuff you'll find here is composed of. In any event, I find Twink's toys to be as fun to listen to as they likely are for him to play with.

There's a certain art to making such innocent-sounding music palatable for an indie listener, and Mike Langlie has achieved that mysterious mix of curiosity and electronic goodness again and again. And again. A Very Fine Adventure sizzles once it hits the pan and grills really tuff when "Blindfolded Bird Race" sends its stinky stuff into the air. There's even a temporary slow down, as if the toy has run out of batteries and then somehow finds enough power in its soul to bring itself back to life. Or maybe I just look too deeply... In any event, if there ever is or was a museum of musical oddities, you'd have to give this guy a table. Rarely do electronic acts manage to tell a story so deftly.
